History

The church was founded in 1218, with the current building dating from around 1350. Four bells are recorded in the Church Inventory of 1552. Two trebles were added in the 17th century and the six were re-hung in the old frame after being re-cast by the Whitechapel foundry in July 1812. Two further trebles were added, together with a clock, and the tower opened for ringing again on 27 November 1829. Tiebars had to be added to hold the tower together around 1927, but it was damaged during The Second World War, and was declared unsafe in 1954. Restoration, using a new steel ‘inner tower’, was completed for re-dedication on 12 December 1970.

Transport

  • By Road: The church, at the southern end of the village, is on the western side of the A23 (Croydon, Redhill, Crawley and Brighton road). Access from the M25 is at junction 7, and the M23 to Gatwick (junction 9) and the Gatwick spur. A few parking spaces are available outside the church; otherwise go past the Six Bells and use far car park. Do not park on the A23.
  • By Bus:Routes 20 and 100 stop on A23 within sight of the church (also, less frequently, 526 and 527).
  • By Train: Less than 15 minutes walk from railway station.
