History

The North Aisle of the church was built circa 1080 and includes a Norman arch, window and the tower (about two thirds of the present height). The priest may well have lived in the area we now use as the ringing chamber. The South Aisle was built around 1280 and has good, interesting murals on the walls. Some two hundred years later, around 1480, the nave and chancel were completed, together with an excellent screen. The next stage of development was the re-building of the vestry in 1540. The top of the tower was added circa 1660. In 2008/9 a small extension was added to the northern side, giving the parish and our visitors much better facilities - a kitchen, a toilet and a small meeting room.

Transport

  • By Road: Aim for Horley (M25 Junction 8 or M23 Junction 9 - Gatwick). Where the A23 and A217 meet is the Longbridge roundabout, take the Povey Cross Road that runs along the north side of the airport to Charlwood village.
  • By Bus: Metrobus number 526 runs from Crawley or Horley. Monday - Saturday service, roughly hourly in the week and half as frequently on Saturday finishing quite early in the evening.
  • By Train: To Horley or Crawley then pick up the Metrobus service.

Facilities

There are now toilets in the new church hall at the back of the church.

The village has three pubs; all serve food and are ‘children-friendly’. Horley and Crawley both have plenty of places to eat.
